Jacob Irwin Makes Strides in Rookie Lightning Sprint Season

The IRA Lightning Sprint series serves dual purposes for teams in and around the Southern WI/Northern IL area. One being to serve as a feeder series to the top flight IRA divisions of the Wisconsin Wingless Sprint Series and the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprints. The other being to provide a somewhat cost effective way for teams to either enter into the sport, or continue to develop their skill set in a fun and competitive environment.

Jacob Irwin’s 2023 season took advantage of the first purpose, charging onto the racing scene in his rookie season in a full size race car with the series.

The goal going into the season was for Irwin and the Irwin Motorsports team to simply gain experience and make improvements throughout the 14 race season. Not only did they accomplish that, but Irwin racked up 6 Top 10 finishes and 2 Top 5’s, including leading laps in his rookie season against a stout and experienced field.

“I met almost all of my personal goals for this year.” The 14 year old stated. “We ran in the top 5/10 consistently all year and were fairly competitive throughout the season. Especially leading laps. We didn’t really expect that. I feel my race craft really improved throughout the year as we gained more experience with the car.”

Irwin’s highlight of the season was leading the field for a time at one of the biggest events of the season for the series; the John Smith Memorial at Sycamore Speedway.

“Leading laps at a race like that was definitely my favorite moment of the season.” I know it meant a lot to me and the team to put in a strong showing at a bigger show.”

As far as what the future holds, Irwin has multiple options to look forward to.

“We’d like to run some sprint car shows maybe later next year, but the main focus will still be the Lightning Sprint.” Irwin confirmed. “The eventual goal will be to get into a 410 Sprint Car like my dad [Ryan Irwin] races, but I’d like to find more consistency in the Lightning Sprint first and really feel confident in our night long pace there. Thank you to all my sponsors for their support this season and we hope to do even better next year!”
