Will Armitage Logs First 410 Sprint Car Podium of 2023 at Jacksonville

“I went into the night knowing we had an opportunity to really get our season kicked off.” Armitage said of this past weekend’s event. “I think we proved that last Friday at Jacksonville.”

Kicking the night off with a 2nd place run in his heat race, Armitage lined up for the 25 lap A Main in the 9th starting position. Making moves on the technical low side of the ¼ mile oval, the Athens, IL driver quickly drove into the Top 5 and began pressuring former MOWA Sprints champion Korey Weyant for a podium spot.

After powering past the #47 of Weyant, Armitage set his sights on the Top 2 of Paul Nienhiser and Ryan Timms. The two front-runners would eventually make contact in dramatic fashion, with Timms riding the catch fence but continuing. This allowed the XKGLOW #7A to close up to the #5T of Timms for the runner-up spot. Once again utilizing the bottom, Armitage pulled even with Timms entering turn 1, and the #5T simultaneously spun through the middle of the corner bringing out the caution with just 4 laps to go.

On the ensuing restart, Armitage shot past Nienhiser on the low side to take the lead for a lap, but eventually relinquished the top spot to the defending MOWA champion with 2 laps to go. Armitage kept within striking distance of Nienhiser over the final two circuits, but couldn’t get close enough to mount a challenge and crossed the line for a fantastic 2nd place result.

“It obviously sucks to come that close and charge at the leader, but to take the lead and race side by side with Paul [Nienhiser] for a feature win was a great feeling.” Armitage stated. “We aren’t done yet. I’m as motivated as ever and ready to take myself and our partners to victory lane.”

Will Armitage Racing will continue their 2023 campaign with a doubleheader this weekend. On Friday, June 2nd the XKGLOW #7A will be at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, IL with the MOWA sprint cars, then Saturday the team will head south to Farmington, MO’s St. Francois County Raceway and the 26th Annual Queen’s Royal, paying $10,000 to the winner. Tickets for both events will be available at the track.
