Jake Neuman was expecting to run his Brandt Racing 3N Midget at the 6th Running of the Shamrock Classic. Instead, due to weather concerns and likely having to pit outdoors, the team opted to leave the Midget at home, and throw the former POWRi National Champion behind the wheel of the Dale Greene #99 Winged Micro Sprint for the 2 day show.
Friday got off to an inauspicious start for the 99 team, with issues in group qualifying burying Neuman in the 5th starting position for his heat race. The track was still hooked up on the bottom for the 10-lap sprint, and Neuman brought the 99 across the line in 5th.
“We were behind the 8-ball from the start on Friday.” Neuman said. “We had some bugs that we worked out over the course of the weekend, and we ended both nights with a really fast race car.”
A fast race car may have been an understatement, as Jake piloted the 99 Micro from 14th on the grid to a 5th place finish on Friday night. Utilizing a wide and fast Southern Illinois Center racing surface, Neuman was able to dodge numerous incidents and make up places at a rapid rate.
“Not a bad run on Friday.” Jake stated. “We knew the speed was in the car after that, and we just had to stay on top of things on Saturday to hopefully improve.”
A better qualifying effort on Saturday put the 99 machine on the pole of their heat race, but it wasn’t to be. The outside front row starting car jumped the start twice in succession, and as a result the entire front row, including Neuman, was moved back. That meant Jake would start 3rd instead of 1st. Once again, the surface was locked down on the bottom and Neuman finished a comfortable 3rd.
The Feature was once again a different story, with the New Berlin, IL native methodically picking off cars from his 9th starting position. A much cleaner feature meant Neuman would have to make up places based off of pure pace, and he did just that. Running the bottom groove to perfection, the 99 moved forward to once again finish 5th to make it a Top 5 sweep on the weekend for the Dale Greene owned team.
“Just a really fun weekend overall.” Neuman said. “The track was awesome for both features that really produced some great racing. I can’t thank Dale, Greg and Alec enough for giving me a great car to drive.”
Jake Neuman Racing will next look to 34 Raceway on April 1st and 2nd with their Brandt Racing 410 Sprint Car for the IRA/MOWA Clash. Tickets for the event are being sold at 34raceway.com and both nights will be broadcast LIVE on FloRacing.
