It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. Jack Vanderboom put that saying into action last Saturday night at Gravity Park Speedway in Chilton, WI.
Battling handling issues in qualifying, Vanderboom ran only 6th quick in his group, setting him back for the heat race.
Pushing off 6th, Vanderboom made a mistake early on, spinning and being forced to restart in last place. A furious drive through the field and a fiery battle with fellow #TeamMAS driver Will Gerrits for 5th and 6th in the closing stages netted the Dousman, WI driver 5th at the flag, enough to transfer to the night’s main event.
Starting a distant 15th on the grid, Vanderboom made up places in bunches throughout the A Main, using the bottom and high grooves to perfection. The team had made some drastic changes to the Bluemound Express Moving and Storage #U2 before the A, and they paid off. “Fast Jack” wheeled his machine to a 7th place finish at the checkered, the second straight 7th place result to start the 2021 season.
“Our night started off a little rough,” Vanderboom said. “We missed the setup for qualifying and it set us back for the heat race. Then I hiccuped on a start and spun out, but we got back to the transfer by the end, and the changes we made after the heat really made it possible to charge in the feature and we got another top 10. So it ended with a pretty good result.”
Another valuable points night for the teenager means he now sits 4th overall in the 2021 MSA Sprints standings through the first two rounds.
The MSA Sprints series heads home to The Dirt Track at Plymouth in Plymouth, WI for the track’s season opener. Tickets will be available at the track on Saturday.
