The number one priority in passing points format racing is to simply pass cars in your heat races. However, when a track is hammer down and one lane, it makes that goal that much harder. Saturday night’s MSA race at the Dirt Track at Plymouth saw several series front runners stuck in either B Mains or in the back of the A Main qualifiers due to little to no passing done in heat race action and poor pill draws. Unfortunately for Will Gerrits and Tyler Brabant, they were lumped in with that group.
After an abysmal pill draw put Gerrits starting 8th and Brabant 9th in their respective heat races, the two knew they’d have their work cut out for them. Gerrits was able to make up one position on the initial start, but after that, both Brabant and Gerrits’ fields spread out, and neither advanced further. That meant both cars would head to one of the night’s 2 B Mains.
In B Main number one, Gerrits started 4th and used aggressive moves (including a wheels up pass and slide job on Scott Conger) to advance to 2nd at the checkered and transfer into the feature. Brabant started 7th in B Main number two, and also went on the attack, moving into 5th before a late race caution. On the restart, Brabant rocketed around the outside of two cars and was momentarily in the third and final transfer spot, but would ultimately fall to 4th at the flag, missing the A Main slot.
Gerrits rolled out 19th for the 25 lap feature, and he’d find himself surrounded by cars that usually contended for wins week in and week out such as, Ben Schmidt, Travis Arenz, Lance Fassbender and more, all relegated to poor starting spots due to their own pill draw struggles. Gerrits gave it everything in the feature, but was only able to advance 3 positions in the Green to Checkered main event for a 16th place finish.
“We we’re just behind the 8 ball all night with our pill draw.” Gerrits said about the evening’s struggles. “A very fast race track didn’t allow much passing early in the night and it put us both in the B Main. I fortunately transferred with starting further up, but Tyler was buried deep in his B and he barely missed out. I passed some cars in the A Main but it was still short of where I know this car is capable of. Hopefully our luck turns around next week!”
With this weekend’s finishes, Will Gerrits moved into 8th in PDTR 360 Sprint points, and 9th in the overall MSA standings, while Brabant sits 15th in MSA points.
The MSA tour will head back to The Dirt Track at Plymouth in Plymouth, WI for a regular PDTR Program on Saturday, and then to Historic Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI on Sunday. Tickets will be available at both tracks this weekend.
